On dark nights, when thoughts fly like night birds
looking for prey, it is important to remember
to bless with names every creature that comes
to mind, to sing a thankful song and hold
the magic of the whole creation close in the heart,
to watch light dance and know the sacred is alive. (Dark nights, It is important and After the Invasion from Indian singing in 20th Century America)
To indigenous people culture is an organic part of their community. It represents a continuous relationship between living beings, plants and places the community is connected to. They pass their culture on to next generations and it is the very base of their future existence as a people. The worlds of indigenous people are an interlacement of supernatural forces, the cosmos, spiritual forces and gods. Each thing has its own master and each phenomenon a cause. It is extremely important to be
in balance with nature. Earth is the kingdom of mythological beings, gods and ancestors, worshipped in rituals. Rituals help toward a peaceful coexistence with plants and animals, restoring the life circle. Indigenous people are trying to protect their heritage, values, cultural identity and way of living from external influences.
