Karmina Šilec nominated for the Europe Prize New Theatrical Realities
The prize as an “Oscar for European Theatre” or “Oscar for Drama”
The Europe Prize New Theatrical Realities (EPTR) was founded to encourage new trends in European theatre in all its forms, articulations and expressions. The prize for theatre innovation has been awarded to Anatoly Vasiliev, Christoph Marthaler, Romeo Castellucci, Thomas Ostermeier, Katie Mitchell, Heiner Goebbels, Rimini Protokoll, Pippo Delbono, Guy Cassiers, Krzysztof Warlikowski, and others. Nominating the candidates, the jury works closely with several associate members of the prize board: Union des Théâtres de l'Europe, Association Internationale des Critiques de Théâtre, International Theatre Institute, UNESCO, European Festivals Association, former prize winners, representatives of European theatre festivals, theatres, institutions and also critics from major European newspapers.
The Europe Theatre Prize (ETP) was established by the European Commission as a prize to be awarded to individuals for their entire artistic path in the field of international theatre.
The Europe Theatre Prize (ETP) was launched in 1986 as a pilot project by the European Commission. The first steps at the time were led by Melina Mercouri and Jack Lang, the French Minister of Culture at the time and the president of the prize. The European Parliament and the European Council supported the project as a "European cultural interest organisation". The Europe Theatre Prize winners for life work are the artists: Ariane Mnouchkine, Peter Brook, Heiner Müller, Robert Wilson, Luca Ronconi, Vaclav Havel, Pina Bausch, Harold Pinter, Robert Lepage, Patrice Chéreau, Krystian Lupa and Peter Stein.
The awards ceremony programme is a rich theatre performance as it is considered the "Oscar of European theatre" or the "Oscar for drama". The ceremony, which this year coincides with the thirtieth prize anniversary, will take place in Rome between 13th and 17th December, 2017. The award giving ceremony of the 16th Europe Theatre Prize and the 14th Europe Prize New Theatrical Realities will run as a special programme of the Italian Ministry of Culture, under the patronage of the President of Italy.
